Abstract

A project to develop standard markings, signage, and application criteria for multilane roundabouts in Canada is in progress. The objectives are to:

  • Review and evaluate relevant studies and data regarding markings and signage at multilane roundabouts
  • Identify conditions under which various signs and markings should be used.
  • Provide application criteria and offer alternatives where the devices are not recommended.
  • Provide recommendations regarding the potential need for a public education program or changes to the rules of the road.

The project will involve a review and evaluation of related studies and ongoing research in the US and Canada as well as a review of applications currently used across Canada. Advantages and disadvantages of the various devices will be described and a recommendation made regarding a national guideline. If sufficient data do not exist to determine a recommended approach to marking lanes within a roundabout, then simulator testing will be expected as part of the study.

The major project deliverable will be a report synthesizing the evaluation, simulation testing and recommendations regarding signs and markings in multilane roundabouts, justification and recommendations for application criteria and options where application is not recommended. Recommendations for changes to the appropriate section(s) of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC) will also form part of the project deliverables.
