Abstract
The 1998 publication provides guidance on the design and application of pavement markings and signs for bicycles and bikeways. However, there is a need to update the guidelines with additional traffic control devices not included in this publication. This update would include recommendations from the recent project to develop new bicycle pavement markings and associated signage, as well as any recommendations that emerge from the upcoming simulation testing of coloured bicycle pavement markings. The project would also include a review of all sections of the 1998 Guide and other relevant TAC manuals to identify any other improvements and additions that may be needed with respect to bike pavement markings and signage. It is also expected that two or three additional non-regulatory signs or tabs would be developed through this project.
In addition, as part of this project, specific wording will be prepared for any recommended changes to the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC) that are required as a result of ongoing work regarding bicycle traffic pavement markings and signage. This will also include results from the upcoming simulation testing of coloured bicycle pavement markings.
The major project deliverables will be up-to-date bikeway traffic control guidelines, in English and French, designed to enhance the safety and effective flow of bicycle traffic.
